Police are continuing to look for the driver who crashed through the wall of Kintaro Japanese Restaurant in Kapa‘a early Saturday morning.
The driver of a local sedan plowed into the restaurant around 1:49 a.m., police said. According to witnesses, the driver then fled the scene and headed to Wailua Houselots.
Lt. Kaleo Perez said, though the driver has yet to be arrested, police believe a license plate that was left behind inside the middle of the restaurant belongs to the driver.
Police did locate a vehicle with major damage in the front yard of a Wailua Houselots residence that they suspect is the car that crashed.
The restaurant was forced to close Saturday as a result of the crash, but was reopened for business yesterday.
The restaurant is normally closed on Sundays.
Damages have yet to be estimated, as the restaurant’s owner is still working out details with the insurance company.
Originally police had informally estimated damages to be in excess of $10,000. But Perez said taking further information into consideration, that figure was likely way too low.
A Kintaro employee said the damage was done mostly in the back area near the benches.
