KILAUEA — It was a night for the H teams as three boys’ basketball teams starting with the letter “H” posted victories at the Kilauea Neighborhood Center, Monday night.
The Hammahs held off a late surge by the Westside White to post a 35-27 edge at the buzzer, Hanakila ran all over the court en route to a 28-20 showing over a tenacious Gee Unit in Game 2, and Ho‘ouila outran Wailua 38-21 in the county’s 13 and Under boys basketball league.
Kasen Delos Reyes launched a three-point bomb and Jude Cruz graced the Hammahs’ effort with a bucket in the final period as the boys in black went on to outgun the Westside White 5-4 in that frame to clinch the victory.
The Westsiders came as close as two points late in the fifth period when Chase Parongao and Ariel Lahip drew buckets for the 23-25 deficit.
That only triggered the frontline of the Hammahs into action as they held the Westsiders at bay for the remainder of the game.
Lahip paced the Westsider effort with 7 points with Parangao finishing with 5 points.
Cruz topped the Hammahs’ scoring with 11 points followed by Brian Haz netting 6 points and Wilson finishing with 5 points.
Marlon Cudiamat capped the Hanakila running with 20 points in its win over the Gee Unit who relied on its tall man, Adam Clark, who also posted 11 points in its efforts.
“The boys (Hanakila) were really on tonight,” said Bill Troutman, site manager for the basketball league. “It was a good game, but the Hanakila boys were running tonight.”
Following Cudiamat’s lead, Mark Raza posted 7 points with Morgan Childs finishing with 4 points and Kawika Wellington adding 3 points.
Running was also the key to Ho‘ouila’s win as Ricky Tommy paced the running game with a game-high 17 points, 10 coming in the first two stanzas when the yellowshirts set the tempo, finishing the opening frame with a 10-4 lead.
Following Tommy’s lead, Kevin Esteban and Willis Batol netted 8 and 6 points, respectively, to lead the yellowshirts.
Wailua, despite playing catchup throughout the contest, got balanced scoring as Nathan Morales and Gonsalves led the way with 6 points each followed by Lance Miyashiro and Vince Simon finishing with 4 points each.
