It’s called the calm before the storm. The lull before the massive waves form and the wind blows.
That was the scene at the Wailua River yesterday as the waters were clear and calm.
But that won’t be the scene this morning as hundreds of athletes will hit the water for the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation paddling championships today.
The Kapa‘a High School Warriors have dominated all the major categories winning four weeks in a row since the season began last month.
Just last week, Kapa‘a swept the field finishing well ahead of its competitors.
In the Varsity Girls division, Kapa‘a beat Kaua‘i High School and Island School in the finals with a little more than 7 seconds posting a time of 4.02.58. That time itself was a two-second improvement from the time the girls posted earlier in the morning when they posted a 4.04.04 in the preliminary round.
Kaua‘i took second with a time of 4.09.83. Island School finished with a time of 4.30.06.
The Varsity Boys division, Kapa‘a outright took the finals with a time of 3.38.09. Kaua‘i trailed at 3.47.05 and Waimea High School rounded up the pack at 3.59.24.
Kapa‘a then took the Varsity Mixed division with a time of 3.54.83. Kaua‘i came rowing up with a time of 4.04.75 and Waimea came in at 4.06.67.
The junior varsity teams had much closer times. Two seconds separated the Kaua‘i and Kapa‘a boys A teams and just more than one second separated Kaua‘i’s and Kapa‘a’s mixed teams.
But the major action will take place today as Kula School hosts the KIF championship regatta starting at 10 a.m.
The teams will be competing for not only the title but for times qualifying them for a state championship berth. The First Hawaiian Bank/Hawai‘i High School Athletic Association Canoe Paddling State Championships will be on Feb. 29 at Keehi Lagoon on O‘ahu.
