KILAUEA — Lance Miyashiro pulled Wailua to within a digit with less than a minute to play, Monday night.
That see-saw battle between Wailua and the Hammahs ignited the good-sized crowd at the Kilauea Neighborhood Center as they cheered on the greenshirts’ effort that came up short 33-37 at the buzzer in the second of three games played in the county’s 13 and Under boys basketball league.
Earlier, the Westside Blue pulled away from Hanakila to take a 48-33 win, and in the finale, Keane Agoot led Team Central to a 66-24 control over Ho‘ouila.
Fueled by an 8-0 second period where Miyashiro netted 4 points, Wailua took a 10-7 halftime lead.
Miyashiro combined with Zavier Cummings to come up with eight of Wailua’s 11 points in the fourth period where the greenshirts out-shot the Hammahs 11-2.
But Kameron Perez combined with Austin Oshiro and Brian Haz for an explosive 18-0 frame where Perez led the charge with 7 points followed by Oshiro and Haz netting 6 and 5 points, respectively.
That set up the showdown in the final frame where Miyashiro netted four of Wailua’s 6 points while the tenacious defense held the Hammahs to just two points until the buzzer.
In the final minute of play, Kaimana Wilson pulled the Hammahs out of the 27-28 threat by Wailua, and a 3-point bomb from Perez at the buzzer sealed the win.
Perez and Haz paced the Hammahs with 10 points apiece followed by Oshiro’s 6 points.
Miyashiro led the Wailua effort with a dozen points followed by Nathan Morales and Cummings netting 4 points each. Noah Morales added 3 points with a pair from P. Tacbian and Treston Brede rounding out the math.
Earlier in the evening, Elmer Cudiamat netted 4 points with Kelikau Baclayon and Marlon Cudiamat each netting a pair as Hanakila took an 8-7 lead at the buzzer.
But the Westside Blue took off from the second period behind 14 points from Kaili and a dozen points each from Paul Oligo Jr. and Brandon Palacio to seal the win.
The Cudiamat brothers, Elmer and Marlon, paced the Hanakila effort with 10 and 6 points, respectively.
Keane Agoot’s firepower and the height of Duke Pauli, Keone Kinzie and John Das kept the smaller Ho‘ouila boys working, but in vain.
At one point, the stronger and taller Team Central players had the yellowshirts perspiring to a point where they were tripping over their own perspiration.
When the dust settled, Agoot finished with a game-high 28 points followed by Pauli netting a dozen points. Kinzie and Das added 8 and 6 points, respectively in the win.
Willis Batol, the never-say-die guard from Ho‘ouila who had several putbacks of his own shot efforts, led the yellowshirts with a dozen marks.
Following a week of on-again, off-again games, the county’s 13 and Under program is scheduled for three games at starting at 6 p.m. tomorrow at the.
