PUHI — Island School players wished the season wouldn’t come to a close just yet. Playing in front of their home crowd in their new gymnasium, the Voyagers were fired up taking a 24-16 lead into halftime.
Kaua‘i exploded for 23 points, taking a 39-32 lead after three quarters of play. Davone Florence scored 11 of his game-high 19 points and 8 points came from Cody Iwasaki.
But the Voyagers answered with a 14-7 final frame coming up victorious 46-45. Leading the way for Island School was Kyle Lee with 17 points, Makana Lesdesma 7 points and 6 each from Brandon Taylor and J. Riley Louis.
Also in the scoring column for the Raiders were Joe Durnslet with 7 points and Austin Simao with 4 points.
“Our young men came a long way, they just had that never say die attitude and just started believing in themselves after our win against the Menehune,” said coach Dean Pigao, in a release.
“If you missed out on this years JV season, you missed some great games coached by class act coaches. My colleagues would be pleased to know that their JV coaches did a great job this year. Hats off to Waimea’s Kawika Smith, Kaua‘i High’s Derrick Borrero and Kapa‘a’s Mitsui Yokotake,” said Island Schools Athletic Director, Kirk Correa, in a release.
