David Hubbard of Lihu‘e took first place in the DropKnee and Open division of the body boarding Margara Challenge in Puerto Rico, late last month.
Hubbard, who participated in the annual competition for his first time and was the only Hawai‘i surfer in the event, dominated his heats after the first day. Hubbard secured a berth in the DropKnee final and scored the “Best Tube” of the event.
Hubbard finished with the Contest MVP award for his stand-out performance, Best Barrel, first place in DropKnee and first place in Open. For that, Hubbard received two Custom X body boards, prizes, wooden trophies and $4,400 in prize money.
“Besides Pipeline, this was one of the best and biggest wave events I’ve ever surfed,” Hubbard said in a release. “I was really happy and surprised to beat my own high expectations.”
The Margaro Challenge is in his fifth year running and is considered one of the most elite invitational for body boarding.
