Rainy weather conditions created a mess for the JN Automotive/Hawai‘i High School Athletic Association State Soccer Championships yesterday at the Waipi‘o Peninsula Soccer Complex causing a few games to be called early.
But that proved to be a good sign for the two Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation teams in the tournament — Kapa‘a and Kaua‘i High School.
Kapa‘a defeated fourth-ranked Kahuku High School 3-0 in one of the sludgefests that ended early.
“I was glad they ended it when they did because it was getting ugly,” said Kapa‘a head coach Kevin Cram. “(The players) would kick the ball and it would land and it wouldn’t do anything. It was just bad.”
Kapa‘a was going into the half with a goal from Ian Lactaotao and a pair from Chance Bukoski.
Kapa‘a (2-0 HHSAA, 8-1-1 overall) now advances to the semifinals at 4 p.m. today at the complex and will play the winner of the No. 1 Honoka‘a High School team and Kaua‘i.
The two schools were tied at 0-0 when the game was called because of the weather. The Raiders (1-0, 5-2-2) and the Dragons (11-4-0) will pick up in overtime at 10 a.m. today to determine which team will advance to the semis.
