WAIMEA — Tino Ramos scored the game-winning bucket last night as the Kaua‘i High School’s boys basketball team escaped with a 42-40 triple-overtime victory over Waimea High School at the Clem Gomes Gym.
Waimea got its first lead of the night from a pair of free throws from Keelan Sakuda. The game teeter-tottered from there with both teams shifting the lead.
Kaua‘i would go on to lead 26-20 going into the half.
Kaua‘i opened with a 10-0 run to jump to its biggest lead at 30-20. It didn’t last long as Waimea rallied back into contention.
Heading into the fourth quarter, Waimea got within 2 points on a fadeaway jumper from Braxton Garma.
On Kaua‘i’s possession, Scott Taylor, who was playing well up until that point, was called for a technical foul when he slammed the ball on the court following a travel call. That sent Garma to the line for two shots. Garma tied the game when he sunk both.
The game went into its first overtime when the Menehune and Raiders were stuck at 38 apiece.
Kaua‘i’s Tyrus Ceria-Lux fired off a last-second shot which rattled off the rim to force the second overtime.
Kaua‘i’s Jeremy Robinson scored the first overtime bucket, but it was answered by Waimea, sending the game to the third and final OT.
Waime‘a’s Kaimana Girod was sent to line for a chance to gain the lead. Girod missed both shots and Kaua‘i was able to snatch the ball and put it in the hands of Ramos for the win.
The Raiders end their season 8-0. They were led by Ramos who finished with 13 points. Ceria-Lux finished with 10 points. Teila Huni finished with 8.
The Menehune were led by Girod who posted 11 points, six rebounds, three steals and a block. Greg Griffin finished with 10 points and seven rebounds.
The Menehune will finish their season Saturday in Kapa‘a.
