WAIMEA — Waimea High School’s girls basketball defeated Kaua‘i High School last night 46-26 at the Clem Gomes Gym.
Waimea jumped to a 10-point lead in the first quarter and held Kaua‘i to just 2 points. Waimea continued its run into the second and went into the half 23-6.
Waimea went on a 26-0 run jumping to 32-6. Kauai didn’t score another point until Janessa Grady was sent to the foul line where she dropped the tail end of a charity pair, and combining with a bucket from Kira Taylon, the score reached 36-9 going into the fourth.
In the fourth quarter, Kaua‘i scored more points than it did in the previous three quarters combined while outscoring Waimea 17-10.
Grady finished with 6 points total with 4 of those coming in the fourth. Kathleen Cadiente finished with 8 points — 7 of them coming in the fourth, two 3-pointers and a free throw.
Kelsey Cadiente also scored 5 of her 7 points in the fourth, a field goal and a 3-point bomb.
Waimea was led by Aiko Grande and Kierra Barba who both finished with 10 points. Sheana Mata and Cheri Kua both finished with 7 points. Erin Connelly scored 6 points.
Lorrine Lagoc-Agrade came up with 4 second-half points, and Chaelyn Briones came off the bench for a pair in the second quarter.
With the win, Waimea improves to 2-1, and travels to Kapa‘a this Friday to end the round. The two teams are now tied in the second round and Friday’s game will determine the Round 2 champion.
