Three different readers wrote in to divulge a yen for “Hanalei dipping sauce.” Eileen Godfrey of Simi Valley wrote: “I couldn’t resist picking up a jar, considering the fact that Hanalei was such a wonderful little town, and I wanted to take a part of it home with me … what a simple but wonderful flavor. It truly was a taste of Hanalei.”
Taste of Hanalei dipping and marinade sauce Web site claims it was conceived of and taste-tested on the sands of Hanalei. What began as a concoction for dipping sashimi, became the family condiment to accompany chicken, beef and pork. It’s ingredients are low-salt soy sauce, sesame oil and local spices, according to the company Website.
Here at The Garden Island, our tasters tried it as a dipping sauce with tako and tofu, and as a marinade with green beans. Words used to describe it were, “salty,” “a nice bite” in reference to the heat and “this would be good with pot stickers.” It is available at the Kaua‘i Products Store in Kukui Grove at $8 for 7.5 ounces or on-line at the company Web site — tasteofhanalei.com — for $5.
