WAIMEA — Come to the birthday celebration of Scotland’s most acclaimed poet Robert Burns at the Waimea Plantation Cottages Saturday.
The Burns’ supper celebrates this special man with food and his poetry and music. The annual event begins at 5 p.m. with a no host bar and silent auction featuring many unique items followed by a procession through the palms led by the Celtic Pipes and Drums of Hawai‘i starting at 5:45 p.m.
Dinner under the palms will be catered by Contemporary Flavors followed by the accompaniment of Celtic music by the Ali‘i Strings.
Poetry and other Scottish traditions associated with traditional Burns suppers are combined with a Westside flair.
Visiting guest artists originally from Alba, Scotland, include Mac Lindsey who will be honoring the haggis and John Davidson, singer, reciter of poems, and teller of jokes accompanied by pianist Ron Berod.
For two centuries Scots the world over have celebrated Burns’ birthday with enthusiasm rivaled only by that of Hogmanay, their traditional New Year’s celebration.
The son of a struggling tenant farmer in Ayrshire, Burns was born on Jan. 25, 1759. He died in 1796, at the young age of 37. Burns’ Night is a tribute to his acute insight into the human condition and his unique talent for expressing it with wit and satire.
The occasion is also a time-honored opportunity to emulate Robbie Burns in his appreciation for the Scottish zest for life. The Hawaiian Islands have, for more than two hundred years, fostered close relations with people of Scottish heritage beginning with Captain James Cook.
Hawai‘i’s monarchs retained close ties with Great Britain, including Scotland. The Hamakua Coast on the Big Island earned the nickname of the “Scotch Coast.”
The 2007 Burns Supper is generously supported by the Rotary Club of West Kaua‘i, Waimea Plantation Cottages and Kikiaola Land Company. Proceeds go towards the Waimea High School Culinary Arts Program and the Rotary Scholarship Program.
