The Kaua‘i High School Red Raider girls soccer team defeated the Spartans of Seabury Hall 3-0 yesterday to advance into today’s JN Automotive State Soccer Championships .
Kaua‘i scored all its goals in the first half. Skye Shimabukuro, Brandi Gomes and Lauren Riley were the scorers of the game held at Saint Louis School.
Under the new system of the Hawai’i High School Athletics Association, the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation has traditionally received one tournament berth. Similarly to the KIF, the Maui Interscholastic League has three eligible teams — Moloka’i High School, St. Anthony High School and Seabury Hall Academy.
Because Kapa‘a High School was the KIF champion, the Warriors (7-0-1) received the automatic berth in the state tournament.
Kaua‘i (4-3-1) had to play Seabury Hall for the extra playoff berth allotted for the smaller, Division II schools.
With the win, Kaua‘i will play second-ranked Hawai‘i Prepatory Academy at 3 p.m. today at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Park on O‘ahu.
No. 3 Kapa‘a received the first-round bye and will play the winner of the Campbell High School/Sacred Hearts Academy game at 3 p.m. tomorrow, also at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Park.
