Competition for the Monster Energy Pipeline Pro at Banzai Pipeline on O‘ahu was held back again yesterday for the third day in a row due to “a disorganized swell that is not yet producing quality rides,” officials said in a release.
A new northwest swell was expected Monday night going into yesterday for the competition, but was not producing waves decent enough to ride. The swell was expected to angle more last night to retain 4- to 5-foot waves for today.
Organizers are hopeful that the competition will resume today. The call will be made at 7 a.m. today.
The official waiting period for the competition started on Sunday and will hold until Feb. 6. The 128 surfers from 10 nations are competing for a piece of the $50,000 in prize money.
Kaua‘i’s Evan Valiere, Roy Powers and Bruce and Andy Irons are among those competiting in the Monster Energy Pipeline Pro.
The competition will be held on the three biggest and best days of surf available within the holding period.
