David Kaheleiki ‘Bear’ Kaaumoana
David Kaheleiki ‘Bear’ Kaaumoana died at his home in Kakaako, O‘ahu, on Jan. 19, 2008, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease. A lifelong son of Kaua’i, he and his wife have resided in O‘ahu for the past few years. He was born Nov. 26, 1933, in Hanalei. He was 74 years old.
‘Bear’ Kaaumoana, a proud Hawaiian, is profoundly mourned by his family and has long been missed on Kaua‘i’s North Shore by his many friends for his wonderful musical talent and his gentle personality and laughing smile.
After graduating from Kaua‘i High School, he joined the Marines and served in Korea. Later, home on Kaua‘i, he worked as a heavy equipment operating engineer. Following his retirement, he, his ‘ukulele and his wife traveled extensively throughout the Mainland, Europe and Asia.
Ed Carl Requilman
Ed Carl Requilman of Kapa‘a died at Wilcox Memorial Hospital on Jan. 13, 2008, at the age of 57. Born in Washington on Nov. 30, 1950, he was a contractor.
He is survived by girlfriend Laurie Hugentugler; daughters Monica Requilman Schiffer and Erika Requilman Valente; grandchildren Breeann, Bailey and Janey; sisters Jude (Chuck) George, Linda (Richard) Oshiro and Nancy (James) Tashima; brother Robert (Mary) Requilman; mother Michi Carlos; numerous nieces and nephews.
A celebration of his life will be at 2 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 26, at Lydgate Park. The event will be a potluck. For more information, call Robert 634-6761.
Alma A. Carroll and Erin H. Carroll
Alma A. Carroll of Kekaha died at the Kauai Veterans Memorial Hospital on June 29, 2007, at the age of 53. She was born in Waimea on Dec. 30, 1954.
Erin H. Carroll of Los Angeles died at home on March, 28, 2006, at the age of 60. Born in Waimea on May 9, 1946, she worked at Pacific Bell in Los Angeles.
They are preceded in death by parents Albert W. Carroll Sr. and Jeannette Mileka Holt Carroll. They are survived by brother Albert W. “Baba” (Gloria) Carroll of Lannon, Wisc.; sisters Bridget E. Chandler of Kekaha, Maureen J. Carroll and Colleen L. Johnson, both of Los Angeles.
Memorial services will be at 10 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 26, at St. Theresa’s church followed by burial at Kekaha Hawaiian Cemetery.
Casual attire is suggested.
Bruce Marcus Horka
Bruce Marcus Horka passed away peacefully on Jan. 11, 2008 after a long battle with cancer. He was born on April 29, 1951, in Cleveland, Ohio. His death follows that of his parents Joseph and Anna Horka. He is survived by his wife Rose; children Travis and Tairoy (and Leila); and brother Duane Horka, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law and loving friends. Bruce was in the United States Navy and served two tours aboard the USS Independence. He was the founder and owner of Custom Landscaping and Maintenance for the past 22 years. Since semi-retiring, he had spent much of his time with loved ones in Grass Valley, California, where he enjoyed hunting, going on RV trips and sharing his “home away from home.” He was a leading husband, loving father, generous friend, and man of God. We were blessed to have known him and long for the day that we will meet again in heaven. Services will be on Saturday, Jan. 26, 2008 at Calvary Chapel Kapa‘a where Bruce was a longtime member. Visitation begins at 9:30 a.m. and the ceremony will begin at 10:30 a.m.. The family asks that flowers be omitted.

Vivian Kekai “Coco” Brown
Vivian Kekai “Coco” Brown of Hilo, died Nov. 11, 2007, at Hilo Medical Center in Hilo.
Born in Kealakekua, Kona, on March 4, 1958, she was a professional entertainer and musician on Kaua‘i and the Big Island.
She is survived by her mother MaryMae Kaupu of Pahala; companion David Hanakeawe of Hilo; sons Michael (Jasmine) Brown of Kapa‘a, Derek Kau‘i Brown of Hilo, Malcolm (Charlene Cadiente) Brown of Koloa and Shawnsie Lee Aki of Hilo; daughters Brianne Lee (Malia) Kaupu of Ho‘okena, Vivian-Malia (Russell Isa) Brown of Hilo, and Mikela (Josh Preston) Brown of Kaua‘i; brothers Larry (Dutchee) Kaupu Jr. of Mark Twain, McKinley (Michele) Kaupu of Ocean View and Rudolph (Corinne) Kaupu of Ocean View; sisters Mary Kaupu of Opihihale, Stephane (Kevin) Kapupu-Ceasar of Pahala, Cheryllynn Kaneholani of Anahola, Eleanor Kaupu of Na‘alehu and Leslie (Joseph Kaneholani) Kaupu of Anahola; hanai sons Jeremy (Summer Lorenzo) of Mountain View and Moon Lake of Kapa‘a; hanai daughters Kamaka Davis of Mark Twain and Starlynn Kaupu of Anahola; hanai brother Roy Martinez of Puna and hanai sisters Lori Lynne Kawaauhau of Opihihale and Maile (Pio) Pua-Raquel of Honoka‘a; six grandchildren; numerous uncles, aunts, nephews, nieces and cousins.
Brown’s ‘ohana extends an invitation to friends and extended family to join in a celebration of her life Friday, Jan. 25, at Lydgate pavilion with music, kanikapila, food and fellowship. Although “Coco” was put to rest on the Big Island, she left part of her legacy here on Kaua‘i.
Alejandro Motilla
Alejandro Motilla of Lihu‘e died Jan. 15, 2008, at Wilcox Memorial Hospital. He was 79.
Born in the Philippines on March 10, 1928, he was a laborer.
Motilla is survived by children Cresencia (Cecilio) Sagucio, Inocencia Motilla, Placido (Remedios) Motilla, Francisco (Remegia) Motilla, Clarito (Florida) Motilla, and Eddie (Fely Rose) Motilla; sister Urbana Macayan, Yrinea Motilla, Juanita Motilla; brother Florencio (Marcelina) Motilla; sister-in-law Catalina Motilla; two great-grandchildren; 14 grandchildren; nieces Pacita Motilla (Teodolo Ganitron), Precilla (Villamor) Fabro, Narcisa (Bredito) Gonsalez; and nephew Victor (Yvonne) Motilla.
He was preceded in death by his wife Alepia Orpia Motilla; his parents, Mariano and Tomas Motilla; sons Eusebio and Ariston Motilla; daughters Adela and Liza Motilla; brother Fermin Motilla; and sisters Dorotea Leonin, Dionecia Motilla and Benita Motilla. A service will be from 8 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 30, at Immaculate Conception Church. Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Burial will follow at Lihu‘e Cemetery.The family requests casual attires. Borthwick Kauai Mortuary is handling the arrangements.
Ken Thompson
Ken Thompson (aka KT and Dr. O’Toole) died Jan 12, 2008, in Seaside, Ore., after 67 well-lived years.
He was born in Iowa, raised in California, started a family in Hawai‘i, and finally settled in Wheeler, Ore. He developed real estate and owned restaurants around the country, notably the Cock’s Inn in San Francisco, Pat’s Pub and Deli on Kaua‘i, and Guido’s in Wheeler.
KT adored his parents, Tommy and Maxine. He is survived by his children, Patrick (Jina) Thompson, Kelly Thompson, and Shannon (Jon) Scott; grandchildren Blaise, Lily, Mia, Skyler and Scarlett; and other-halves Nancy and Judy. The rest of his family was comprised of wonderful friends; he was very well-loved.
Per his wishes, his remains will be put in the Pacific Ocean so “that way I will come and go twice a day to Wheeler.” Family will celebrate his life with an Irish wake/party on Feb. 2 in Wheeler.
Kuuleinani Cho
Kuuleinani Cho of Keauhou, Hawai‘i, died Jan. 9, 2008, at Life Care Center of Kona. She was 85.
Born Dec. 28, 1922, in Keala-kekua, she was a homemaker and coffee farmer.
She is survived by son Donald (Randi) Cho of Honaunau; daughters Abigail (Victorino) Bio of Honaunau, Olani Cho of Keauhou, Charlene (Shoji) Taketa of Honalo, and Ok Cha Cho of Honolulu; sisters Mary Ann Pua Lindsey of Lihu‘e, Agnes Kelii of Waikoloa; brother Walter Cho Sr. of Kainaliu; 27 grandchildren; 58 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be at 8 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 2, at Lanakila Congregational Church on the Big Island. Service will be at 10 a.m. with luncheon to follow.
Arrangements are being handled by Cremation Services of West Hawaii.
