The Kauai Island Utility Cooperative has nominated three of its board members to be on the ballot for the March 22 election.
The KIUC’s self-determined nominating committee, made up of Michael Murakoshi, Mark Ozaki, Linda Salvador and Michael Tresler and chaired by KIUC board member Alfred Laureta, selected Dennis M. Esaki, Teofilo Phil Tacbian and Peter Yukimura, to be on March’s ballot for the position.
Last year’s three elected directors were David Iha, Allan Smith and Carol Bain. That election drew 7,191 ballots, 1,540 more ballots than the previous year.
A director is one of nine elected representatives of the members of KIUC who collectively constitute the Board of Directors, according to a KIUC prepared statement.
There are staggered three-year terms for the Board of Directors, tasked with helping allocate a quarter-billion-dollar budget.
The board also governs the business and affairs of KIUC but its priority lies with the broader courses of action to be followed by the utility, and not involved in the day-to-day operations of the utility, according to the statement.
KIUC members can also be nominated by collecting 35 signatures of other members who are electric account holders that are in good standing.
To qualify, potential candidates must submit a completed member petition to the nominating committee no later than 4 p.m. Feb. 11, according to an e-mail from Shelley Paik, KIUC spokeswoman.
All candidates with valid petitions who have completed the director’s orientation will be placed on the ballot for the March 22 election.
