KAPA‘A — Kekoa Prem scored 13 points to lead the Kapa‘a High School Warriors to a 56-36 victory over the Waimea High School Menehune last night in Kapa‘a.
Both teams got off to a late start going scoreless for nearly half of the opening quarter. Waimea’s Braxton Garma was the first to score at 4:45. The quarter ended with a low 7-4.
Kapa‘a got rolling in the second to bring the score up to 23-16 by the half.
Waimea was strong on the rebounds (25) but the Menehune just couldn’t get the ball in the net.
Kapa‘a’s Kila Youn scored 9 points and had 7 rebounds. Thomas Gausephol and Keleo Cummings both scored 8 points apiece. Cody Abrigania and John Berales each had 7.
Garma led the Menehune with 8 points. Kaimana Girod posted 7 points and five rebounds. Keelan Sakuda had 5 points and five blocks.
In the earlier junior varsity game, the Menehune were trailing the Warriors by 10 points in the third quarter. Within a couple of minutes, the Menehune got within 3 points, which was the closest they’ve ever come to their competitor after being down double digits.
The Menehune kept it close, ending the third quarter within 8. Waimea then actually outscored Kapa‘a in the fourth, scoring 24 to Kapa‘a’s 22. But it wasn’t enough to come up with the win. Kapa‘a won 50-44.
Stephen Greenleaf led the Warriors with 17 points. Preston Ikehara-Yasay scored 12.
Malcolm Carter led the Menehune with 12 points, while teammate V.J. Carenio scored 11.
Kapa‘a will host the Kaua‘i High School Red Raiders this weekend. The girls will play on Friday starting at 5:30 p.m. The boys will tipoff on Saturday also starting at 5:30 p.m.
