The Red Raiders boys of Kaua‘i High School got their first regular season win last night over Kapa‘a High School at the Kaua‘i. Kaua‘i won 62-49.
The game was much closer than the score would lead to believe. Both teams were quick and aggressive on the court, but Kaua‘i played off the boards and came up with the much-needed rebounds and turned them into scores.
Kaua‘i grabbed 37 rebounds to Kapa‘a’s 17.
Kaua‘i wasted no time scoring, jumping to 13-point lead in the first quarter. By the second quarter, the Warriors were able to slow down the defending Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation champs’ offense and got within 8 points.
But that was the closest they got to Kaua‘i as the Raiders came back in the third to extend the lead to 46-26.
Basil Walton led the Raiders with 27 points, three 3-pointers and was 4-of-8 from the free throw line. Tyrus Ceria-Lux had 14 points and was 3-for-4 on the line.
Kekoa Prem led the Warriors with 14 points, five of them coming from the line. Cody Abrigania had 13 points and John Berales had 8.
The result was the same for the afternoon junior varsity match. Kaua‘i won 65-50. Kaua‘i had four players go into double digits in scoring. Cody Iwasaki led the Raiders with 16 points, followed by Cameron Largusa who had 15.
Nick Chow and Austin Simao both had 11.
For Kapa‘a, Lewis Lindsey led the team with 11 points.
Kaua‘i’s boys travel to Waimea High School Saturday for their next set of games.
Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
