Leilani Bond Kauai Christmas Concert Dec. 21
Kumu hula, musician and recording artist Leilani River Bond of Wailua will perform and conduct “A Kaua‘i Christmas Hula Concert” on Dec. 21, at the Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort in Po‘ipu. Doors to the ballroom open at 6:30 p.m. and the show begins at 7 p.m. Leilani is celebrating Christmas Hawaiian-style with the keiki and adult dancers of Halau Hula o Leilani.
In addition to island-style Christmas songs sung in Hawaiian, Leilani and musicians Wes Kaui, Dayne Pabo and Charlie Iona add original Hawaiian and Tahitian holiday songs. Composed and put to music by Leilani, Darryl Low, Michael Ruff, and Tepairu Manea, these original songs, as well as other familiar Christmas songs, are featured on Leilani’s CD “A Kauai Christmas” released in 2006. This Christmas CD and Leilani were finalists in the 2007 Na Hoku Hanohano awards presented by the Hawaii Academy of Recording Artists.
The keiki in Leilani’s halau have been practicing their dances, including “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer,” “Menehune Santa” and “The Twelve Days of Christmas” done in pidgin English. The wahine of Halau Hula o Leilani will interpret “Christmas in Hawaii,” a unique version of “Winter Wonderland,” “Noera (Noel in Tahitian),” and “A Kauai Christmas.” Other hula kahiko and hula auana plus Tahitian dances and songs by Leilani will fill the evening’s program.
Guest performer Michael Ruff of Princeville, a musician, composer and arranger, will accompany Leilani, and share his own songs of joy and reverence.
Uncle Larry Rivera, one of Kaua‘i’s most famous entertainers and composers for decades, and Leilani’s father, will add his own well-known compositions and humorous stories to the evening, including the story of Menehune Santa.
Drawings for two ukuleles will be held.
This will be a festive, family-oriented celebration of the season. Bring kupuna and keiki to enjoy the music and hula that Leilani Rivera Bond and the halau are bringing to all.
