The Waimea High School cheerleading squad is on O‘ahu today to compete in the Zippy’s State Cheerleading Championships at the Stan Sheriff center.
The Menehune are one of 13 squads that compete in the Medium division, which includes the reigning cheerleading champs from Radford High School and three-time champs from Moanalua High School.
“We’re just happy we’re going,” said Waimea head coach Roxanne Cardejon.
Cardejon has made three state championship appearances with the Menehune in the three years she’s been with the squad.
“We just have to go in there and show our routine and have a good time. That’s all we can go for,” she said. “I told them that all the hard work they put into that routine is well worth that time.”
The Menehune will perform a routine similar to the one the performed at last month’s KIF championships with props and lifts. For the KIF meet, they constantly made changes up until the big day.
It happened again for states.
“We changed the beginning a little bit with the pyramids because we didn’t want what happened to us at the KIF championships,” Cardejon said referring to a missed lift. “At states, (the judging) is so much harder and they changed the point system again, so we just want to make sure we hit all our points and keep it in the 4.0 target range.”
Waimea will be the fifth squad to go today, behind Roosevelt, Kalaheo, Waiakea and Moanalua high schools. Radford caps the day.
Last year, the Menehune finished 13th. Cardejon said their goal is to finish a little higher than that this year.
