Tourists at the Kaua‘i Marriott Resort in the Kalapaki area got a run for their money yesterday as at least five police chased and later arrested a man who ran through the property.
Kauai Police Department Capt. Ale Quibilan said Lihu‘e police responded to a call around 7:30 a.m. yesterday in response to a disturbance in the Puhi area; upon arrival, the subject, Terrence Oliver, 23, fled the scene. He was on the loose for two hours.
Quibilan said that Oliver’s fleeing caused police not only to pursue him, but to find several outstanding warrants for his arrest on charges including two criminal contempt of court charges, as well as third-degree promotion of a dangerous drug, possession of drug paraphernalia and first-degree burglary and second-degree theft charges.
Quibilan said Oliver fled on foot and ran toward the Aloha Church in Lihu‘e, but officers lost sight of him. He likely hitchhiked out of the Puhi area, as he was later spotted near Nawiliwili Harbor at the Kaua‘i Marriott Resort, Quibilan said.
“The pursuit was from Puhi and across through the subdivision and across through the Aloha Church” he said.
After he was spotted in the Kalapaki area near the Kaua‘i Lagoons Resort, another pursuit ensued. Police chased him again and he was later apprehended in the Industrial area in Lihu‘e, Quibilan said.
“He entered the Phase II industrial area and crossed into the Phase I industrial area near the Coca Cola bottling area,” Quibilan said.
Oliver faces no charges for fleeing as he hadn’t been under arrest when officers responded to the disturbance call, which was a criminal property damage complaint. At press time bail had yet to be calculated, however Oliver was in custody in lieu of bail at the Lihu‘e cellblock.
Police had yet to add up the bail associated with all of the warrants; however, not including the theft, burglary or drug charges, the bail associated with the outstanding warrants is at least $1,700, Quibilan said.
