Theodore H. (Ted) Drews of Lihu‘e, died at home on Nov. 14, 2007, at the age of 82.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 39 years, Sheila. Prior to fulfilling their long-time dream of moving to Kaua‘i in 2003, the couple lived in Northern Virginia for nearly 40 years.
Ted was born in Dearborn, Mich., on March 17, 1925. He served in the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1945 (which was when he first learned to love Hawai‘i).
He graduated with Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctoral degrees from the University of Michigan, and worked for the university until 1966, including managing a two-year public administration project at the University of the Philippines. From 1966 until 1995, when he retired, he administered higher education statistical programs for the U.S. Department of Education in Washington, D.C.
He is also survived by his brother- and sister-in-law, Alan and Anne Farrer, nieces Alison and Hazel, and great-nieces Carly and Ellie in England; special friends Margaret and Jeff Portch in Wales, Wendy Boldman in Alexandria, Va., and Andy and Becky Gagnon in Lihu‘e; and his dogs and cats Mango, Kimmy, Naomi and Olivia.
Since coming to live on Kaua‘i, Ted greatly enjoyed not only her beauty and ambience, but also the friendliness and kindness of her people. One of his great pleasures was in volunteering at the Kaua‘i Humane Society and with other community groups.
No service is planned and flowers are gratefully declined. Donations, if desired, may be made to the Kaua‘i Humane Society or Kaua‘i Hospice.
