WAILUA — A small car fire broke out yesterday afternoon on the Wailua side of the Kapa‘a bypass road, injuring no one but backing up traffic.
According to Kaua‘i Police Department, a female driver and young passenger abandoned the Chevy two-door sedan after seeing smoke exit from under the hood. The driver called 911 at 3:11 p.m.
Firefighters from the Kapa‘a station responded and extinguished the flames within five minutes. Both diver and passenger were fine, and there were no other vehicles involved.
The road was closed for about 20 minutes as vehicles were re-routed on both ends of the bypass. After the car was deemed safe, it was pushed to the shoulder and the road was reopened, according to KPD.
The cause of the fire is unknown.
