Hideo Paul Hasegawa
Hideo Paul Hasegawa of Hanapepe died Nov. 11, 2007, at Queen’s Medical Center, at the age of 71.
Born Oct. 12, 1936, in Hawai‘i, he was a maintenance worker for P.M.R.F.
He is survived by sons Dorin Hasegawa and Scot Hasegawa; daughters Damaine Hasegawa, Christine Hasegawa-Dela Cruz and Michelle Hasegawa; brothers Masao Hasegawa and Kunio Hasegawa; sister Beatrice Kanda; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Memorial services will be on Saturday, Nov. 17, at Salt Pond. A celebration of his life will be at 11 a.m. Inurnment will be at a later date.
Casual attire is suggested. Arrangements are being handled by Borthwick Kauai Mortuary.
Mary Ewaliko Ahana
Mary Ewaliko Ahana, of Lihu‘e, died Nov. 12, 2007, at her home at the age of 91.
Born Dec. 8, 1915, in Anahola, she was the retired owner of Ahana Motel.
Preceded in death by daughter Joyce (Richard) Watanabe and grandchild Garrett Shiets, she is survived by husband Ah Sau Ahana of Lihu‘e, daughters Carol (Edwin) Kondo, of Honolulu, Janice Shiets of Kaneohe and Eli Kikuchi of Lihu‘e; sister Ruth Texeira of Anahola; grandchildren Eric Kondo, Keith Kondo, Joni (Harold) Tanaka, Laurie (Richard) Apiki, Wanda (Wesley) Toyama, Kevin Watanabe, Lianne Watanabe, Ross Watanabe of Honolulu, Kent (Lori) Kikuchi of Lihu‘e and Keri (Ben) Kobayashi of Hilo; 13 great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren.
Friends may visit with the family from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 19, at Lihu‘e First Hawaiian Church, where services will be at 11 a.m. Cremation to follow.
Casual attire is suggested. Arrangements are being handled by Borthwick Kauai Mortuary.
Yoshio Matsuyoshi
Yoshio “Oscar” Matsuyoshi of Hanama‘ulu died at Wilcox Memorial Hospital on Nov. 2, 2007, at the age of 81.
He was born in Lihu‘e, on May 3, 1926, and retired from Lihue Sugar Plantation as a power plant operator.
He is survived by his wife Mildred; daughters Vivian McCravey of Honolulu, Claire (Mark Christian) Mindoro of Hanama‘ulu; sister Toshie Aquino of Lihu‘e, two grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews.
Private services were held. Kauai Memorial Gardens & Funeral Home assisted the Matsuyoshi family with arrangements.
Joseph Gary Bland
Joseph Gary Bland, of Kapa‘a, died at home on Oct. 7, 2007, at the age of 47.
Born in Tulsa, Okla., on Feb. 7, 1960, he was a truss builder for Island Truss, Hanama‘ulu.
Mr. Bland was preceded in death by his parents Charles Cecil and Geneva B. Bland.
He is survived by his brothers Donald (Lorraine) Bland and Charles (Tina) Bland II; sisters Bonnie (Jim) Pierson of Pryor, Okla., and Jayne (Billy) Topper of Claremore, Okla.; nephews Jake Bland and Carter Mackey; nieces Darci and Bailey Topper, Leah Naveck, and Brooke Bland-Fielder.
Memorial services will be held Saturday, Nov. 17, at the north end of Lydgate near the mouth of Wailua River at 1 p.m.
Patrick Joseph Morse
Patrick Joseph (“Joe”) Morse passed away peacefully at his home in Kapa‘a on Nov. 2, 2007, at the age of 65.
Joe was born in Jamestown, Calif., on Feb. 5, 1942. About 9 years later the family moved to Sonora, Calif., where Joe finished grammar school and high school. Upon graduation from high school in 1960, Joe traveled to Kaua‘i for the first time, along with his sister, Carolyn, as a graduation gift from his great aunt, Mary Ann Wickey, who had lived on Kaua‘i for many years.
Joe attended Modesto Junior College and the University of California at Davis.
After graduation he moved to Hawai‘i and taught high school for many years, all on Kaua‘i. He taught first in Koloa and then at Kapa‘a High School. His subjects were French, mathematics, and guidance. His career was interrupted for a tour of duty in the Army in Vietnam, but he returned to Kaua‘i after he was honorably discharged and resumed teaching. He loved his students and over the years touched many lives on Kaua‘i. Joe retired from teaching approximately five years ago.
Joe’s parents were Robert and Eva (Franco) Morse, both of whom predeceased him. He is survived by his sister and brother-in-law Carolyn Morse McGinty and Roger McGinty of Sequim, Wash.; brother and sister-in-law Robert Morse and Marianne Morse of Eureka, Calif., and niece Anna Morse of Eureka, Calif.; aunt Alma (Franco) Montanelli of Chico, Calif.; cousins Ernest Carboni of Sacramento, Calif., Larry Franco of Westlake Village, Calif., and Rick Franco of Modesto, Calif. Joe is also survived by his dog Jackson, who is going to a good home on Kaua‘i.
Joe loved to travel and took many extensive trips around the world, both during school vacations and after his retirement. He visited his family in California almost every year during his life in Hawai‘i. Joe will be missed by his many good friends on Kaua‘i.
A memorial gathering will be held Saturday, Nov. 17, at 11 a.m. at Joe’s home at 302-A Makani, Kapa‘a. Burial will take place later in Jamestown Catholic Cemetery, Jamestown, Calif., next to his parents.

Avelina Asuncion
Avelina Cuaresma Asuncion passed away at Wilcox Memorial Hospital on Nov. 8, 2007, at the age of 80.
Born on May 30, 1927, she was a retired teacher at Elsie H. Wilcox Elementary School and an evening lecturer at Kaua‘i Community College.
She was preceded in death by her husband Pete P. Asuncion.
She is survived by daughters Miriam Ellen (Wesley) Pagador, Evita Asuncion, Grace (John) Harlacher; grandchildren Dustin, Jordan, Taylor, Cheyenne and Kiana; brother Federico “Fred” Cuaresma and sister Mary Christine Guerrero; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Services will be held at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 17, at the Koloa Union Church, where a memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Burial to follow at the Koloa Cemetery.

Peggy Jean Dryden
Peggy Jean Dryden died in Plano, Texas, on Oct. 3, 2007, at the age of 79, after a lengthy illness and a long struggle with Alzheimer’s.
Born in Santa Maria, Calif., on Nov. 4, 1927, she was a retired medical assistant.
She is survived by sons R. Scott (Stella) Greenleaf of Kapa‘a and John L. (Teresa) Gladwill Jr. of Plano, Texas; brother Delbert M. (Goldie) Dryden of Bakersfield, Calif., and sister Carol A. (Richard) Edie of Santa Maria, Calif.; six grandchildren, two great-grandchidren and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her son Steven Eric Greenleaf.
She loved playing bridge with her friends in Hawai‘i and wanted them to kow how much she loved them. A small private family service will be held in California, where she lived for much of her life. She especially loved Yosemite National Park where she worked in her youth and met her first husband.

Itsuko Yamamoto
Itsuko Yamamoto, of Kapa‘a, died at Wilcox Hospital on Nov. 10, 2007, at the age of 90. Born in Kohala, Hawai‘i, on Feb. 13, 1917, she was a homemaker.
She is survived by son Ronald (Gina) Yamamoto of Wahiawa; daughters Helen (Dean) Orikasa of ‘Aiea, Bernice (Robert) Hiraoka of Kapa‘a and Carol (Michael) Kukahiko of Pearl City; 10 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; sister, Mrs. Ichisaburo Nakamura of Japan.
Friends may visit with the family at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 23, at Kamuela Hongwanji, 65-1110 Church Road, Kamuela, Hawai‘i; service at 11:30 a.m. Interment will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 24, at the Waimea Cemetery on the Big Island. Casual attire is suggested and that flowers be omitted.

Robbie Ford
Robbie Ford of Lihu‘e, died Nov. 12, 2007, at Garden Isle Healthcare Center at the age of 93.
Born June 7, 1914, in Oklahoma, she was an aerospeace worker.
She is survived by son Eskel (Mariann) Ford; daughter Robbie (Dana) White; five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren..
