Pass Jessica’s Law
Regarding the sentencing of the man who molested a little 5-year-old girl here on Kaua‘i:
One year in jail? Probation? Fine?
This has to stop here in Hawai‘i. A $10,000 fine?
This is unbelievable to me that the judge finds this man who molested a 5-year-old girl $10,000 and this little girl, damaged for the rest of her life gets only $150 compensation? The dictionary definition of restitution is: “making good, or giving an equivalent for some injury. A condition of being restored.”
So $150 compensates the little girl for her injuries? What’s wrong with this picture?
One hundred fifty dollars says it all. Who was damaged here? … the county? … the state? This is all about the molester and nothing about the victim. Rehabilitation? Give me a break and read the statistics. Bill O’Reilly on Fox News has made it a crusade to get Jessica’s Law enacted and made more progress in this area than any of our politicians. There are only five states now that are heading in the wrong direction on this issue and Hawai‘i is one of them. Doesn’t that make us proud?
This is nothing less than outrageous. I have heard excuse after excuse for this man’s behavior from the court. Do we live in Vermont with judges like Cashman excusing this type of behavior? It’s beginning to look like that’s the case. This is absurd and has to stop. We not only have people all over the world watching us here on Kaua‘i with our violent protesting of the Superferry and recently the unsolved murders television publicity on “America’s Most Wanted,” but now we’re letting the world know that we care more for the welfare of the child molester than we do the child.
Pass Jessica’s Law now.
We are moving backwards here while the rest of the country is moving forward. Are there any politicians any longer who care more about the children instead of their own political welfare? It seems not. Where has the ‘aloha spirit’ gone? I see it fading away fast.
Where are the supporters of Jessica’s Law? Can we find just one? We need some strong candidates in the next election.

On breaking law
Let it run. Right on.
Paul A. Lemke’s letter is what most of the people of Kaua‘i agree on (“Let it run,” Letters, Nov. 6). The protesters are about 2 percent of the total population of Kaua‘i.
Those protesters will find out if they break the law, they will go to federal prison. The local leaders, Sierra Club, 1,000 Friends of Kaua‘i and any head of any other group that breaks the law should be arrested with the group. All because a couple of politicians who have urged these groups to break the law.
Paul has written about Hawaiian matters, and does a lot of research on all matters.

Head scan good idea
According to media reports, after University of Hawaii quarterback Colt Brennan was injured, instead of being immediately transported to a hospital for a head scan, he spent the rest of the game in the dressing room.
As far as I know, Brennan still hasn’t had a head scan. Media reports state that the team doctor will make the decision whether Brennan is well enough to play on Friday, and that Coach June Jones will make the final decision on game day.
One serious problem with a head injury is that it might develop into a subdural hematoma, which is the existence of excess fluid between the skull and the brain. The pressure caused by this condition can lead to temporary paralysis, disabling bodily functions and, if not properly treated, death.
I know this to be true because in 1992 I suffered a subdural hematoma, as the result of getting my head bumped in an automobile accident. It was several weeks after the accident that I began to experience symptoms such as blurred eyesight, slurred speech and then I could no longer feel my right arm. My wife and I were visiting my brother in Scottsdale Ariz., when I could no longer feel my right arm. After fruitless visits to various doctors, my wife insisted that I go to the emergency room at Scottsdale North Hospital, where a scan showed a subdural hematoma. Fortunately for me, there is a Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale, and a very competent Mayo neurosurgeon, Doctor Dean, who literally drilled two holes in my head and drained the fluid that had accumulated. The recovery was almost instantaneous. In a day or so I was completely recovered.
As a result of my personal experience only, and not because of any other knowledge of the practice of medicine, it seems to me that a scan of Colt Brennan’s head would be a wise precaution to take, before he is allowed to play again.

Twisted logic
In the Nov. 6 The Garden Island the writer of the letter “The true test” states: “If the Superferry is successful then the proponents were the majority. If the Superferry fails then the protesters were the majority.”
The first logical glitch is that success depends on your viewpoint. Consequently, if the Superferry operates with a profit, but seriously damages Kaua‘i’s environment or creates chaos on our roads, it will still be a success for the Superferry Corporation, and a failure for the people of Kaua‘i. Will then the proponents be eager to celebrate their having been the majority? And if it operates with a loss and still destroys the environment or creates chaos on our roads it will be a failure both for the operators and the people of Kaua‘i. It still does not make the opponents the majority, unless the proponents suddenly surrender their majority to blame the protesters. So, this may become a lose-lose situation.
The second logical glitch is that neither success nor failure will change the majority or minority, because a future event never changes a past event, except in the school of history writers where this banner greets the visitors: “Winners write the history.”
Now how true is this true test?
