Hats off to Kevin Medeiros for coordinating the girls basketball clinic Saturday. Nani Cockett, the former Kamehameha School (Kapalama) and University of Hawai‘i player brought along a bunch of other players like Ki‘i Spencer, Katy Grubb, Kyla Evers and Brandy Richardson to work with our high school players for free. Coach Sandi Nadatani was there (even Marcus got to tag along) as did coaches Dallas Grady, Terry Maguire and Cecil Gee. Everyone had a great time based on all the laughter, and Kevin was happy there were a lot more girls than last year.
More kudos to the Kaua‘i Veterans Council on a great Veterans Day parade … Beauty Queen Bee Annette Hashimoto (yes, Alicia Higa had her homecoming court in the parade, too) had a stash of Pono Market’s cone sushi and chicken packs, and Bobby Kubota was wrapping them as fast as they were going out.
Jim Miranda had his cowboys out as parade marshals, and Harvey Maeda arranged to have the classic cars and hot rods start off the parade that trooped past emcee Ron Wiley (he gets the same spot next to Kapa‘a Hongwanji every year) and Joe Munechika next to Beezer’s. David Kalahiki was up early getting ready for the buzz, and across the street the Mo’ Betta place should’ve opened their doors so they could move a lot of slices. But that would have left no room for Dickie Chang and Bruce Smalling who were doing the Wala‘au thing there.
Kenny Ishii got to ride in the Smith’s tram instead of doing breakfast at Ono Family, but that’s OK since Roshayne Peahu had her Samurai snacks there as a fundraiser for her Washington, D.C., trip.
