KAPA‘A — Keiki from KIDS School and the Kamehameha Schools’ Anahola Preschool were given a demonstration on what police work entails, particularly it’s anti-drug efforts.
The event was held Thursday at the Kapa‘a Beach Park and was part of the Kaua‘i Police Department’s annual Drug Demand Reduction Program, which aims to educate school-age children on the harmful effects of illicit drugs.
Approximately a dozen police officers took part in the event. Members of the Special Services Team wore their distinctive uniforms and talked about their role in law enforcement.
Vice officers flew in on helicopters and explained how helicopters are used in marijuana eradication efforts, while patrol officers showed the youngsters what a patrol car is equipped with and described how they respond to calls.
“We do this every year for different schools around the island, and hopefully it has a positive impact on the kids,” said Lt. Michael Contrades. “We all need to do our part to prevent them from getting into drugs because we know how devastating it could be for them, their families and friends, as well as the community.”
Phyllis Kunimura, director of KIDS School, was pleased that her students had the opportunity to see up close the vehicles and equipment used by police, and also speak directly to police officers and the helicopter pilots.
“It was a wonderful experience for the children as well as the parents who were able to join us. Everyone really enjoyed it,” said Kunimura.
“The children have been busy drawing helicopters and talking about the officers and helicopter pilots. We are so appreciative of the police department for coordinating such a great event, which even included a ride on The Kaua‘i Bus.”
