The Waimea High School cheerleading squad was hard at work working on their routine for tomorrow’s Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation championships.
Then they made changes.
“It’s nonstop changes,” said head coach Roxanne Cardejon. “We’ve been making change after change. You look at the judges sheet and what they’re looking for and you want to make sure you hit all the points.”
The Menehune have won the KIF championship for the past two years, each of those titles under Cardejon. But each year, Cardejon said every year, it’s like starting over again.
“It’s a totally different squad this year,” she said. “We had to train a girl who has never been a flyer, she’s always been a base. But now she’s a flyer and she’s catching on.”
Cardejon added that, this year, she has cheerleaders who can tumble.
“I’m really happy about that because we’ve never really had anyone who could really tumble,” she said. “We finally have five that can tumble.”
She is hoping they can bank on that.
“It all comes down to 2 minutes and 30 seconds,” she said. “It’s months of planning and hard work all coming down to 2 minutes and 30 seconds. But we felt comfortable with the changes (to our routine). I’m hoping they can stick it.”
The competition starts at noon tomorrow at host school Kaua‘i High School.
