Pierce Murphy has had a successful season. The young freshman representing Kula School competed in his first Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation cross country season and earned his first trip to the Honolulu Marathon/HHSAA State Cross Country Championship held Friday at the Kapalua Village Golf Course on Maui.
Murphy was the KIF’s top finisher in the near 200-runner field with his 28th-place finish and a time of 17:58.70. Rival Kaimana Girod of Waimea High School, a two-time senior defending KIF champion, finished in 35th place with a time of 18:11.35.
Overall, Waimea’s team finished in 18th place. The state title went to the Mules of Leilehua High School.
On the girls side, Waimea’s Natasha Abadillo was the highest finisher for the KIF. Abadillo finished with a time of 22:30.20. Right behind her was Kula’s Gill0ian Picket who clocked in at 22:31.80. Waimea’s girls finished 16th in the team standings and the girls of Punahou School took the championship title.
