Gov. Linda Lingle has released $25 million in design and construction funds to repair, maintain and renovate public housing facilities across the state. This is the first time state funds have been used to repair public housing built by the federal government.
On Kaua‘i, the funds will finance the replacement of cesspools with sewer hookups at public housing developments.
About $20 million will be dedicated to improvements to public housing facilities statewide, including re-roofing, interior repairs, renovation of vacant units, siding and electrical work, kitchen and bath repairs, solar water upgrades and emergency call system repairs.
“Gov. Lingle recognized that the decrease in federal funding to repair federal public housing built 30 or more years ago has resulted in the decline of homes for low-income families and elderly in Hawai‘i,” Linda Smith, Hawai‘i Public Housing Authority board member, said in a press release.
The design phase for projects covered by the $20 million allotment is scheduled to be completed in April 2008. All construction is scheduled to be completed by October 2009.
