Rampaging dogs
Recently in Princeville a very nice, diminutive, elderly lady was attacked and severely injured by some loose dogs.
This lady is a Princeville institution who can be seen walking several miles from her home to the shopping center every day. My wife also enjoys walking around our beautiful area, mostly with our small Lhasa Apso in tow. In the past 10 years she has been assaulted by large dogs off the leash at least a dozen times while their owners stand nearby and do nothing except say, “Oh, he/she won’t hurt you,” despite the fact that the dog is being aggressive to my wife and our beloved little dog. In the last four months she has experienced four occasions of loose dogs while walking along the so-called Queen’s Path parallel to Wyllie Road. In each instance, they were large dogs, two were pit bull mix, and in each case charged my wife and dog while the owner(s) were nearby doing nothing to stop the attack. When my wife protested and reminded them of the leash law, Princeville rule and the fact that they were scaring her, she was verbally assaulted by such remarks as “Who died and made you queen?” as well as considerable profanities, and physical threats. When I pointed the leash law out to some male who was walking (trespassing) on our property with no leash on his dog, he called me a (word removed to protect the innocent) ha‘ole.
We have located and reported several of the offenders to the police and humane society, who did take action and in a couple of cases brought the offenders to court which resulted in a considerable fine. In each of these attacks, my wife has been traumatized as well as physically injured in a couple of cases. This is widespread across Kaua‘i, especially at beaches and in certain towns. I guess the moral to this story is that the people who are breaking the law, trespassing on the Prince Golf Course, and physically and verbally assaulting innocent people (there are many others who have experienced this) feel like they have the right to do this and are in fact offended by anyone who points out their breaking of the law. Now, I will personally report, photograph and take to court anyone I see with a dog off the leash and I am asking the authorities to step up vigilance in this area, as well as anyone else who sees this going on and is threatened by these inconsiderate, self-centered whatever you want to call them. The sad part is that they are also endangering their animal which could run off and get hit by a car or truck. I have had it with these people. I’m mad as hell and I’m not going to take it anymore.

go! ruling ridiculous
I think it’s a complete joke that the Hawaii Federal Court ruled against go! Airlines.
Bankruptcy filings are public information.
Business is business.
When a corporate takeover occurs, you can’t tell me for a minute that the takeover hasn’t been thoughtfully planned out by utilizing information about the weaknesses of the failing company.
Hawaiian Airlines has been in bankruptcy just like many airlines because of one reason: They spend more than they take in.
That’s their problem. It’s mismanagement, overspending, excessive bonuses to company officers and more.
When did the federal court system decide to step in to mandate fines against other companies that run their businesses with a strategic produce, and efficient and economically sound policies? In my opinion, Hawaiian Airlines should not be rescued from bankruptcy, nor should any other airline. They should be replaced by new companies that learn from the pitfalls of their competition, maximize operational procedures and expenses, and meet the public’s needs and expectations.
So, go! gets its hand slapped, and a huge fine imposed, so that what? They can be in the same position as Hawaiian Airlines next year?
I guess if a level playing field is what the federal courts want, they’ve set the ball in motion to create it.
go! did what any great company would do: Found a need in the marketplace for their product and made it affordable to the public. Whatever information they used or found to position themselves is fair game.

Recognizing Merchant Marines
There is a bill in the U.S. Senate that, if passed, will provide compensation to those who were in the Merchant Marine during World War II. Bill S961 is titled “Belated thank you to the merchant mariners of World War II Act of 2007.”
During World War II, merchant mariners worked the most dangerous details and suffered the highest casualty rate of any branch of the service. At the end of the war, the Merchant Marine was the forgotten branch of the services.
Anyone who served in the Merchant Marine during those years or is interested in the bill, please call me at (808) 875-7404.

Bring benches back
The park located in front of the Historic County Building in Lihu‘e is a great area to have a lunch break. I chose to take a lunch break there because it’s close to my work. I get to relax outside in fresh air and there’s shade.
A couple of months ago the county took away these benches in the park, which leaves me inconvenienced during my lunch break. I’m aware of the homeless issue in this area, which explains why the benches disappeared, although, this is unwarranted to everyone else who enjoys this little park in Lihu‘e. Since my voice of concern isn’t enough I ask you in this letter to please bring back these benches.

Ferry free ‘ice’
I was elated to read of the recent bust of the biggest crystal meth ring in the history of Kaua‘i and the confiscation of 6 pounds of ‘ice.’
And by the way, in case you missed it, the Superferry was tied up dockside in Honolulu Harbor the whole time.
