Library takes on ‘Joy Luck Club’

Lihu‘e Public Library will host two free public programs about Amy Tan’s “The Joy Luck Club.”

The first program is a dramatic theatre-style performance featuring local actors on Nov. 7.

The second is a discussion of the book led by Kaua‘i scholar Richard Randolph on Nov. 14.

Both start at 7 p.m. at the library’s conference room at 4344 Hardy St.

The Joy Luck Club performance features actors Nyla Fujii Babb, Dann Seki, Janice Terukina, Yvonne Chang and Salli Morita, who will take the audience on a journey from pre-World War II China to modern day United States through the words and lives of four mothers and their very Westernized daughters, a news release states.

The 45-minute performance will be followed by a question-and-answer session led by University of Manoa Professor Frank Stewart.

The second program, entitled The Big Read, consists of a discussion on Tam’s book led by Kaua‘i Community College Assistant Professor Richard Randolph, who earned his Ph.D in English with a focus on American renaissance writers and 20th century American literature.
