Waimea High School boys and girls captured those titles after holding off strong challenges, but the ones who will be the focus of the state competition are the frontrunners like Pierce Murphy, the freshman phenom from Kula Intermediate and High, and Kaimana Girod, the two-time KIF champion runner for the boys.
Basil Scott, one of the Waimea coaches, said after the KIF championship, he feels that both have a good chance of medaling at the state meet.
Caralyn Broyles and Gillian Picket, the 1-2 finishers for the girls, and Menehune runner Natasha Abadila are also in the limelight. Scott said their finish times in the low 20s are worthy of state attention.
Broyles and Abadila are from Waimea High School and Picket was the consistent top finisher for Kula Intermediate and High.
