Sunday morning Miyoshi “Boxer” and Madeline Matsuda were presented the Distinguished Service Award by the Hanapepe Church of the Nazarene. Presenting the award on behalf of the Hanapepe Church of the Nazarene was Miyoji Furusho. It is the highest honor bestowed upon laymen for faithful service. Proceeds from the award helps to fund the medical plan for missionaries around the world. The Church of the Nazarene has missionaries in 151 world areas.
Boxer and Matsuda have been serving their church and community since the 1980s. Their faithfulness, bright smiles and cheery hellos have been welcomed by all. Their daughter Colleen Yamase, of ‘Ele‘ele, escorted her surprised parents to the platform to receive their honor.
The Matsuda Family includes three daughters and their families: Colleen (Brian) Yamase, Davin, Scott and Troy of ‘Ele‘ele, Kaua‘i; Valerie (Leslie) Matsumoto, Liane and Sara from Paia, Maui; and, Renee (Daniel) Kanekuni, Kai and Chase from West Loch, O‘ahu.
Boxer comes from a family of nine children including sisters Nobuko Oyakawa and Miki Nishikawa both residing on O‘ahu, and brother Ikuo Matsuda residing in Los Angeles. Madeline, nee Gushiken, comes from a family of eight children including sisters Alice Kamiya and Kay Oshiro residing on O‘ahu. The entire family celebrated this honor with them.
The Matsudas were presented with the distinguished award plaque, lei, balloons and other gifts with appreciation for their service. They also received hugs, congratulations, blessings and other greetings from the congregation. Pastor John Mills delivered the message entitled “Serving With a Heart Like Jesus” encouraging all to accept the mission of servanthood as the Matsudas have.
