This Halloween — known in some parts as Sight Night — the East Kauai Lions Club and the Kauai High Leo Club will be asking for more than just candy; they’ll also be scaring up used eyeglasses in various communities around Lihu‘e.
The used eyewear will be recycled by Give the Gift of Sight and Lions Clubs International and hand delivered to underprivileged people around the world. During its nine years, more than 100,000 community volunteers have participated in Sight Night, collecting more than 900,000 pairs of used eyewear.
“Sight Night gives children and adults a tangible way to participate in a global act of kindness on Halloween,” said Lions Chairman Paul Steinfort, according to a press release. “Our efforts will change lives. Some people who receive this eyewear may now be able to work, read or see the board in school because of their improved eyesight. So we urge you to look for your used prescription eyeglasses and non-prescription sunglasses around your home or office.”
If a Lion or Leo doesn’t make it to your house on Sight Night, have no fear. Collecting used eyeglasses is an ongoing project of the Lions Clubs on Kaua‘i, and there will be collection boxes in many optometrists’ offices and other locations around the island, including Big Save (Lihu‘e, ‘Ele‘ele, Waimea), Costco, Long’s Drug Lihu‘e and Wong’s.
