A pickup truck on Kuhio Highway in Hanalei yesterday crossed into oncoming traffic, struck a vehicle and then crashed into a utility pole, causing the lines to dangle close to traffic.
“It looked like the truck had flipped on top of a littler black car, and the power pole was snapped, and fell over the street into the other lines,” said eyewitness Tori Bodin, 17, of Ventura, Calif. “The lines were hanging low and making a ‘buzzing’ sound.”
The accident shortly after 3 p.m. closed Kuhio Highway for two and a half hours, said county spokesperson Mary Daubert. “There were no serious injuries,” Daubert said, “and all I know is the vehicle lost control.”
Witnesses say the driver of the pickup attempted to flee on foot from the scene of the accident. “The guy ran and some people tackled him,” Bodin said, who witnessed the scene with her parents Kent and Denise Bodin, also of Ventura.
The witnesses said the pickup was a full-size American make, and the car was a mid-size sedan. The car was headed toward Ha‘ena when the accident occurred.
The accident occurred near the post office next to the Big Save market. The Bodin’s waited for a half hour in the market parking lot while emergency personnel secured the power lines and diverted traffic.
Daubert said she could not get any information from officials before press time.
