KAPA‘A — Kapa‘a’s Jondi Das came up with two key blocks, but the Lady Warriors couldn’t force an extra game last night.
Das, teaming with Leilani Laranio and Destiny Smith, brought the contest to stalemates on each of her blocks, but Waimea went on to take the season finale in three games, 25-17, 25-15 and 25-22.
Jayme Jacinto, the freshman outside hitter, came up with a kill late in Game 2 to give the Menehune a 23-15 margin before Waimea sealed the game on two Warrior errors.
Jacinto was one of two
Menehune who came straight from the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation cross country championships that were hosted by Island School at its Puhi campus, and despite finishing in the Menehune scoring bloc, was able to get in some playing time.
With the win, Waimea finishes the second round 4-0 followed by Kapa‘a and Kaua‘i each with 1-3 records.
However, Kaua‘i, the first round title holder, will be playing Waimea for the KIF championship Tuesday evening at the Clem Gomes Gym starting at 7 p.m.
Faced with that contest, Waimea coach Chad Dela Noza worked through his roster, allowing some of his secondary players an opportunity to gain experience. That was the case with Jacinto, who saw sporadic playing time throughout the season.
Game 3 was the closest Kapa‘a came to Waimea, tying the contest at least nine times, the Das tandem blocking accounting for two of those stalemates.
With the introduction of Tori Tuttle in the middle blocker position, Kapa‘a jumped on Waimea errors and the hitting of Smith to tie the contest.
Tuttle came up with three
key hits and a block to bring Kapa‘a to a 9-9 tie, the fourth in the contest.
Mailika Napoleon’s slam got the Warriors to 10-10 before Das tied the contest 11-11. Another Tuttle slap from the middle tied the contest 17-17 before the Menehune chipped out its lead behind Brytny Yadao Lanning answering in the middle.
Maliana Hamada had a big kill to bring Kapa‘a to 22-24, but a Kapa‘a hitting error sealed the Lady Warriors’ fate.
In the JV contest, Waimea, getting help from Natasha Abadilla, another cross country competitor, dropped its series in five games, 25-23, 16-25, 25-21, 21-25 and 13-15.
