HANAPEPE — Edsel Lactaotao peeled off a 41-yard touchdown run late in the fourth quarter to break a 20-20 deadlock, Saturday in the first of two JPW games hosted by the Kaua‘i Pop Warner Association at Hanapepe Stadium.
Lactaotao’s run, his fourth of the game, gave the Kapa‘a Eagles a 26-20 edge over the Hanapepe Colts.
With the win, Kapa‘a sits comfortably at 4-1 and 8 points in the standings, a game shy of Koloa who leads the JPW standings at 5-0 and 10 points.
Hanapepe slips to third at 2-3 and 4 points followed by Lihu‘e (1-4, 2 points) and Kekaha (0-4).
Lactaotao heralded the arrival of the Eagles in the second quarter after Hanapepe had posted a 13-0 opening frame behind touchdowns from Prestyn Parongao and Mikey Rita who ran for 1 yard and 11 yards, respectively. Rita also ran in the PAT for the first quarter math.
The Kapa‘a Eagle sliced off a 46-yard run for the 13-6 halftime math that came at the 9:11 mark.
But Lactaotao was not done as he added two more TDs and a PAT boot in the third quarter to pull Kapa‘a ahead 20-13 at the buzzer. His first scoring run netted five yards while his second TD came on a 10-yard charge. Lactaotaor balanced the books with a PAT boot following his second TD that came at the 2:10 mark.
Midway through the final frame, Parongao evened things up on a 1-yard charge into the end zone. He ran in the PAT at the 5:34 mark to even things up at 20-20 before Lactaotao answered with the go-ahead.
Kanoa Iwasaki came up with a 3-yard TD at the 2:32 mark in their game to prevent a shutout as Lihu‘e Patriot JPW dropped to the Koloa JPW, 33-6 in the second JPW contest of the day.
Koloa quarterback Trey Aguano threw for two TDs and had a two runbacks of Lihu‘e turnovers to lead the Koloa charge. Kyren Rapacon iced the victory with a 49-yard scoring run at the 1:25 mark to answer Iwasaki’s score.
All three of Aguano’s scoring passes came in the opening quarter as he connected with Tystin Gummerus for 12 yards at the 6:29 mark and followed that with a 21-yard aerial hit to Duke Hao at the 3:40 mark. Less than 15 seconds later, he ran back a pass interception for 35 yards and graced that score with a pass to Kalawaia Judd for the 21-0 first-quarter bulge. Rapacon and Kainoa Simao ran in the point-after digits after the first and second TDs, respectively.
The 21-0 margin held until the third quarter when Aguano returned a fumble recovery 55 yards for the score to set up Iwasaki’s score in the fourth quarter.
The Kapa‘a Eagles PW scored two TDs in the fourth quarter but came up short 25-13 against the Hanapepe Colts PW.
Lance Miyashiro passed to Makana Artaho-Aki for 14 yards for the first Eagle score, and returned a punt 80 yards for a TD before passing to Morgan Childs for the point-after to account for the Kapa‘a fourth quarter scoring
Kenneth Tacazon passed for one and ran for one touchdown and Rhandy Compoc-Dela Cruz ran into two scores to lead the Colts’ victory.
Tacazon opened up the first half with a 59-yard runback to the end zone with less than a minute to play in the first quarter and followed that with a 29-yard aerial connection to William Ogawa for the second TD that gave Hanapepe a 12-0 halftime lead.
Compoc-Dela Cruz opened the second half with a 53-yard scoring run at the 8:29 mark for the 18-0 Hanapepe lead after three quarters.
Miyashiro opened the fourth quarter scoring that came in the last half of the frame with his 14-yard scoring pass that was answered by Compoc-Dela Cruz running the ball 69 yards for a score. The final Miyashiro hit came at the 1:35 mark when he returned the punt.
With the win, Hanapepe holds the lead in the Pee Wee standings with a 3-0-1 record and 7 points. Kapa‘a drops to 0-3-1 and a points. Kekaha is 2-1 for 4 points in second place followed by Lihu‘e at 1-2 and 2 points for third place.
Moses Fierro had a 53-yard touchdown and Wyatt Chicoine booted the PAT to keep the Hanapepe Colts Midgets from being shut out.
Chaz Dabin notched two TDs to lead the Kapa‘a Eagles Midget team to its 14-8 win over Hanapepe.
Dabin opened the books in the first quarter on a 5-yard run and added another 1-yard TD early in the second quarter for the Kapa‘a scores. Bronson Aiwohi booted the point-after for the 14-0 bulge at the 7:12 mark that was answered by Fierro at the 7:04 mark for the only scores of the game.
With the Kapa‘a win, the Eagles and Colts emerge tied for second place in the Midget standings with 2-2-1 records and 5 points each.
Kekaha leads the Midget standings with anundefeated 4-0 record and 8 points. Following Hanapepe and Kapa‘a, Lihu‘e sits at 2-3-0 for 4 points followed by Koloa at 1-4 and 2 points.
John Das peeled off three TD runs to lead the Lihu‘e Patriot Midgets to its 22-12 showing over Koloa in the final contest of the day.
Das opened the scorebooks late in the first quarter on a 1-yard charge into the end zone only to have Koloa’s Vincent Baloran answer on a 4-yard scoring run early in the second quarter for the 6-6 tie.
With 41 seconds remaining in the half, Das struck on a 25-yard run to the end zone with Jensen Koga adding the point-after boot for the 14-6 bulge at the half.
Koloa came back in the third when Isaac Tehero tapped paydirt on a 2-yard charge at the 9:06 mark.
With 43 seconds remaining in the frame, Das came up with a 5-yard scoring run and Koga adding the point-after boot for the final 22-12 math.
The Kaua‘i Pop Warner Association continues its league play tomorrow with five games on tap at Hanapepe Stadium starting at 9 a.m.
Koloa JPW will attempt to keep its undefeated record intact when it meets the Kapa‘a Eagles starting at 9 a.m. In the afternoon series, Kekaha hosts Hanapepe starting at 1 p.m.
