A southbound vehicle that crossed the center line into oncoming traffic yesterday resulted in a three-car accident on Kuhio Highway just south of Kalihiwai Bridge.
Police, called to the scene at 10:49 a.m., said the driver of the car that caused the accident and the victim in the car on the receiving end of the impact suffered minor injuries.
Both were treated on scene by firefighters and medics.
Heavy rain was a contributing factor in the crash. Speed and alcohol weren’t suspected to have played any role, police said.
Kaua‘i Police Sgt. Bryson Ponce said officers had to close both directions of the highway for about an hour until the wrecked vehicles could be towed away.
After the cars were removed, witnesses reported heavy traffic in the area for several more hours.
Contrary to earlier radio reports of a landslide, officials had none to confirm.
The bridge has been the location of dozens of car accidents of the past decade, several of which were caused by head-on collisions from drivers crossing the center line.
The accident marked the second major collision in two days in which drivers crossed into oncoming traffic. An earlier crash Tuesday involved a mini-van and an oil tanker truck.
