The night ended earlier than Kaua‘i High School’s junior varsity team had hoped Saturday. Kapa‘a High School handed Kaua‘i its second loss of the season by winning in three games, 25-12, 25-23 and 25-22.
After Kapa‘a won Game 1 on a service error, Kapa‘a kept the momentum rolling to the start of Game 2. Kapa‘a jumped to a six-point lead at 21-14.
But Kaua‘i slowly started to close the gap when Alexa Tamashiro hit an ace. Teal Basquez also had her hand in the comeback when she served to bring Kaua‘i within two.
Kaua‘i setter Waileia Kanealii connected with Christina Banach for a kill that shot right to the back corner to bring the score to 23-24, still in Kapa‘a’s favor.
Kaua‘i came out of a Kapa‘a timeout only to shank the serve into the net to give Kapa‘a the Game 2 win.
Kaua‘i started Game 3 with an ace by Kanealii. Things were looking up for the Raiders as they took a 5-point lead at 16-11.
On the sideout, Kapa‘a’s Mele Yama went back to serve and hit an ace. Kapa‘a regained the lead briefly but saw it threatened by the offense from Basquez. As the teeter-tottering continued, Kapa‘a’s Leinaala McCabe went back to serve for match point and the Warriors added a win in their column.
Kaua‘i will play Waimea High School in Waimea on Wednesday.
