Kaua‘i 3, Kapa‘a 1
Kapa‘a High School’s Maliana Hamada and Leilani Laranio were serving their way to forcing a Game 5 against Kaua‘i High School. Hamada and Laranio combined for a match total 13 aces, but it wasn’t enough to match the hitting of Kaua‘i’s Kara-Lei Cummins and Jamilee Jimenez as Kaua‘i won in four games, 25-15, 25-17, 16-25 and 25-21.
Kaua‘i (1-2 Round 2, 4-3 overall) seemed to breeze through Game 1 winning by 10 points and went through the motions again for Game 2.
The Warriors put up a struggle for the Raiders and jumped to a 10-point lead. Hamada set to Mailika Napoleon who registered the kill that gave Kapa‘a the win.
Kapa‘a (1-2, 2-5) then took an early lead in Game 4 but saw that diminished when Jimenez and Cummings went on hitting streaks. Kaua‘i’s Kimi Masumura served three in a row with an ace to tie the game and put serious pressure on Kapa‘a.
With Masumura still serving, Kaua‘i took the lead and come out victorious.
Cummings finished the game with 18 kills. Jimenez finished with 15 kills. Setter Jewell Villatora tossed 28 assists and two aces.
Kapa‘a’s Destiny Smith hit a season-high 10 kills and had two blocks. Napoleon followed with nine kills, 11 assists and an ace. Tori Tuttle came up with nine blocks (three double and six solo).
Kaua‘i travels to Waimea High School to face the Menehune (2-0, 4-2).
In the earlier match, Kapa‘a’s junior varsity team beat Kaua‘i in three games, 25-21, 25-23 and 25-22. For that story, see tomorrow’s paper.
