Another team goes down. I can’t believe LSU lost to Kentucky in triple overtime. How is that for good football on a Saturday morning?
I was trying to keep track of the all the games and saw that the new No. 2 California was losing the Oregon State in the fourth quarter and No. 11 Missouri was leading over No. 6 Oklahoma. What is going on this college season?
But switching gears to the NFL, some of us are still talking about the Dallas Cowboys and Buffalo Bills game, if only to talk about how Dallas quarterback Tony Romo led his team to come back from behind and win the game in the final seconds.
Romo had threw five interceptions and the Cowboys still won the game. Congrats to kicker Nick Folk for successfully hitting those two field goals. (Folk is my fantasy team kicker!)
Romo and the Cowboys take on Tom Brady and the Patriots and analysts and sports fans are debating whether or not Romo has what it takes to lead his team to victory. And why wouldn’t he? If a quarterback can shake off the picks and still be effective on the field, why wouldn’t you give him a shot.
To be honest, I’m still stuck on “SpyGate” and don’t think I’ll ever be able to be a Patriots fan regardless of their numerous Super Bowl wins.
It’s funny though, because I was comparing Colt Brennan to Tony Romo Friday night. The University of Hawai‘i football team was down 35-21 going into the fourth quarter against San Jose State but was able to get closer to the Spartans with less than four minutes left of play when Brennan found Davone Bess for an 11-yard TD pass.
Brennan, who threw four interceptions, tied the game with a two-yard run with 31 seconds left on the clock.
And I called it. Going into the fourth everyone I was around was saying it was over for the Warriors. “They’re done.” “They choked,” people were saying. But I believed in them.
I said to nearly everyone who was interested in the game “They’re going to intercept the ball and score two touchdowns and they’re going to win!” I said it over and over again, and it happened. Not exactly that way, but they won. Just like Dallas did and just Dallas is going to do today. (Yes, I know it’s wishful thinking, but if I say it enough, maybe it will happen.)
I give props to the Warriors for pulling it off and I also give props to Brennan. In case you missed it, not only was Friday’s game broadcast on national television, on ESPN, Brennan was also on ESPN’s “Rome is Burning” as Jim Rome’s correspondent. Every day, Rome sends a camera crew off to follow an athlete for a day and Friday’s correspondent was Brennan. I tuned into the show late just as Rome said, “Let’s send it off to today’s correspondent.”
They showed a montage of Hawai‘i clips, then Brennan walked out of the locker room and introduced himself to the cameras. I was so happy for him. He took the cameras to practice and pre-game warm ups for the Utah State game. I thought it was pretty cool. If you can, try to find those clips. It kind of makes you feel cool about living in Hawai‘i, even though Brennan is actually from California.
Hawai‘i is off this week. Now they can stay at home Saturday and watch the rest of the higher-ranked teams fall to other teams. I’ll be watching too.
