Carol Ann West
Carol Ann West died peacefully at home with her family at her side on Oct. 5, 2007, at the age of 70. She was inspirational and courageous throughout her two year struggle with pancreatic cancer.
She is survived by her husband of 48 years, Alva Jack; son Garrett “Gary” West, of Kilauea; daughters Jacqueline “Jackie” (Victor) Carlson, of Arizona, and Janelle (Johnson) Koo, of Kilauea; mother Mary Van, of California; sister Donna Roberson, of California, and grandsons Jack and Nicholas, who were the light of her life.
Carol moved to Hawai‘i with her family in 1971. She lived on the islands of Hawai‘i, O‘ahu, Moloka‘i and Kaua‘i.
She was a graduate of Long Beach State College, with a major in education. She obtained her master’s degree from the University of San Francisco. She taught at public schools and later became a Montessori teacher and opened her own school on Moloka‘i and Kaua‘i.
She eventually moved her preschool to St. Catherine School. She was the principal at St. Catherine School for the last 15 years, a job that she loved dearly and into which she put her heart and soul.
She was a trained musician and an accomplished vocalist. She sang with many groups and as a soloist. She most recently sang with the Kaua‘i Community College Garden Island Singers.
Carol lived life with a passion. Everyday she enjoyed swimming, singing, reading, knitting, and watching her grandsons grow. She loved flowers and nature and found joy in living each day to its fullest potential.
She was a compassionate person who believed in giving everyone an opportunity to uncover and share their gifts in life. She touched many lives and mentored people in countless ways.
Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. on Monday, at St. Catherine Church. Services will begin at 10:45 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family is respectfully requesting that donations be made to St. Catherine School.
Kaua‘i Memorial Gardens & Funeral Home assisted the West family with arrangements.
Joseph Gary Bland
Joseph Gary Bland, of Kapa‘a, died at home on Oct. 7, 2007, at the age of 47.
Born in Tulsa, Okla., on Feb. 7, 1960, he was a truss builder for Island Truss, Hanama‘ulu.
Bland was preceded in death by his parents Charles Cecil and Geneva B. Bland
He is survived by his brothers Donald (Lorraine) Bland and Charles (Tina) Bland II; sisters Bonnie (Jim) Pierson, of Pryor, Okla., Jayne (Billy) Topper, of Claremore, Okla.; nephews Jake Bland and Carter Mackey; nieces Darci and Bailey Topper, Leah Naveck, and Brooke Bland-Fielder.
Private services will be on Kaua‘i and in Oklahoma at a later date.
Kaua‘i Memorial Gardens assisted the Bland family with the arrangements.
Manuel Basca Cacal
Manuel Basca Cacal of Kaumakani died Sept. 29, 2007, at his home, at the age of 57.
Born Nov. 9, 1940, in the Philippines, he was a truck driver for Gay Robinson.
He is survived by his wife Filipina Cacal; daughters Juvy Tangonan, Myrna Cacal and Eden Cacal; sister Vicenta (Ernesto) Martinez; brothers Virgil (Fely) Cacal and Conrad (Salome) Cacal; nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild; numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his son Arnel Cacal.
Family and friends may visit from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, at Borthwick Kaua‘i Mortuary Chapel in Koloa and again from 8 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. on Saturday, at St. Theresa’s Church in Kekaha, where Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m.
Burial will follow at Kekaha Public Cemetery.
Casual attire is suggested. Arrangements are being handled by Borthwick Kaua‘i Mortuary.
Ceferina Viloria Udarbe
Ceferina Viloria Udarbe of Kekaha died Oct. 9, 2007, at her home at the age of 63.
Born Nov. 27, 1943, in the Philippines, she was a room attendant for the Hyatt.
She is survived by her husband Estanislao Udarbe; sons Edgar (Wendy) Udarbe, of Kekaha; Manuel (Solmarie) Udarbe, of Wahiawa; and Estanislao Udarbe Jr., of Koloa; daughter Evangeline (Marnie) Fernandez, of ‘Ele‘ele; mother Victoria Viloria, of Kekaha; grandchildren Eddie Joe, Paul, Darrin, Veronica, Abigail and Brennen; brothers Rico (Emma) Viloria, of Hanama‘ulu; Felix (Lina) Viloria, Pabling (Gloria) Viloria, Juling (Norma) Viloria, ad Emie (Nena) Viloria, all of the Philippines; sisters Gloria Viloria, of Koloa; and Merlita (Paul) Pimienta, of the Philippines; numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her father Alfredo Viloria and grandson Thomas Isaiah Udarbe.
Family and friends can visit from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Thursday, at Borthwick Mortuary Chapel in Koloa and again from 1 p.m. to 1:45 p.m. on Saturday, at St. Theresa’s Church in Kekaha, where services will be celebrated at 2 p.m.
Burial to follow at Hanapepe Public Cemetery.
Casual attire is suggested. Arrangements are being handled by Borthwick Kauai Mortuary.
