NAWILIWILI — Sandy Wabinga was pleased her blood pressure reading came in normal. Her co-worker, on the other hand, had a slightly higher reading, which generated a few questions.
But that was the point at the annual employee benefits fair Tuesday at the Kauai Marriott Resort & Beach Club.
More than 15 vendors converged at the ballroom for the fair, including Amber Mohr of the American Heart Association, who was happy to talk about high blood pressure with Wabinga and her co-worker.
“This benefits fair helps prepare the employees for their benefit enrollment, which takes place between Oct. 17 and 31,” Jolene Ogle of the Marriott’s human resources office said.
In addition to benefits information, many of the vendors offered games with premiums for the resort’s 565 employees.
Others such as Cora Pascual and Jan Pascua of the state Department of Health came to offer information and awareness on breast cancer.
Jason Chang and Gayle Lim of Kaiser Permanente had grip testing equipment to entice employees to stop at their table, while a little further down the row, Ann Bae of Pacific Guardian Life manned a catapult that launched origami balls into Styrofoam cups for prizes.
“We do this around this time of the year,” Ogle said. “It coincides with the employees needing to enroll for their benefits and it’s a good way to get them aware of some of the things that affect their lifestyle.”
Ogle said this year’s event was spearheaded by Darrah Peleras.
With the recent acquisition of the Kauai Lagoons property, this was the first time the Lagoons’ employees joined in.
