Better Business Bureau gets new look
Better Business Bureau has changed the way businesses affiliated with the organization are designated, as it now calls its members “BBB Accredited Business.” The change is part of a larger public outreach campaign highlighting the information, resources and services the bureau offers to help the public make informed pre-purchase decisions.
According to a bureau press release, the “accredited” designation highlights the fact that affiliated businesses contractually agree to meet and uphold the bureau’s high standards for integrity and reliability when dealing with consumers. The bureau reviews each applicant and strictly enforces its standards, accepting only those meeting its standards.
“Accreditation clearly defines what a business has achieved, stands for and promises to consumers,” Dwight Kealoha, chief executive officer of Hawai‘i’s bureau, said in a press release. “Accredited businesses pledge to follow through on their commitments, deliver on their promises and right any wrongs if an honest mistake has been made.”
Other visible changes at the bureau include a new logo, a redesigned Web site and a new tagline: “Start With Trust.”
To further its goal to cultivate and encourage trust between consumers and businesses, the bureau has introduced a series of how-to books, “BBB Insiders’ Guides,” on buying a home, buying a franchise business and starting a business on eBay.
Among the bureau’s long-standing services are:
• Pre-purchase advice for consumers as well as tips and alerts on the latest scams and fraud.
• Reports on businesses and charities.
• Complaint and dispute resolution services as well as a specific line for automobile manufacturer issues.
There are more than 3,000 BBB Accredited Businesses across Hawaii. In 2006, Hawaii’s BBB responded to over 100,000 requests for Reliability Reports and helped to resolve nearly 3,000 consumer complaints with local businesses.
Hawai‘i’s Better Business Bureau provides consumer education programs, including Military Line for service members, retirees, Department of Defense civilians and their families, as well as Wise Giving Alliance, which helps donors make informed giving decisions.
