For the third time a docile corn field has been turned into a twisting and turning labyrinth offering unique family fun at night, and the possibility of an alien encounter.
With the joint effort of Grove Farm Inc. AJAR, Pioneer Seed Co. and Kauai Christian Fellowship two acres of land has been turned into three weeks of fall adventure.
Created by professional corn maze designer Rob Stouffer, the maze has over a mile and a half of trail that twists and turns in circles and right angles.
“We flew Rob in from Missouri to help us lay out the maze,” said Rick Bundschuh, part of the Kauai Christian Fellowship leadership team and the one who originally came up with the idea of doing a corn maze on Kaua‘i. “He creates a new custom design for us each year, first mapping out the field with Global Positioning Satellite technology and then plotting a maze within the field borders,” Bundschuh explains.
“During the day families with small kids and various school and community groups come through the maze, but a lot of people like to come in the evening (the maze is open later on Friday and Saturday) because going through the maze in the dark is a whole different experience and sometimes even a little spooky,” Bundschuh states in a release.
Visitors to the maze park at the Kauai Christian Fellowship parking lot, pick up their wrist band and hop on the shuttle which takes them to the maze entrance. The Corn Maze adventure is staffed by adult and teen volunteers from the church who provide both the friendly human touch and serve as not-of-this-world inhabitants after dark.
“We strongly suggest people wear shoes and bring or buy water to take with them,” said Bundschuh, “and if you think you might be in there long, better pack a lunch too,” he states.
The staff estimates it typically takes 30 to 45 minutes to navigate the maze although some do it faster and some ultimately have to be ‘rescued.’
Church sponsorship of the maze is often the connecting point for people Bundschuh meets. “If I meet someone I don’t really know and tell them that I am part of Kauai Christian Fellowship a lot of times they will brighten up and say ‘Oh! The Corn Maze church,’” he chuckles. Kauai Christian Fellowship is located at 2731 Ala Kinoiki (the Koloa Bypass Road) in Po‘ipu. The maze is open each weekend until the last week of the month when it opens every day until the 30th. For hours and rates call 742-9396 Group rates and special group openings are available.
