What is going on with my college football teams so far? Well, they’re not “my” college football teams as they are the nations Top 25. Yesterday, more ranked teams went down to lower-ranked or unranked teams. Stanford upset USC, 24-23.
What is going on with my college football teams so far? Well, they’re not “my” college football teams as they are the nations Top 25.
Yesterday, more ranked teams went down to lower-ranked or unranked teams.
Stanford upset USC, 24-23. No. 5 Wisconsin dropped to Illinois. Kentucky lost out to South Carolina, Kansas to Kansas State and Georgia to Tennessee. Arizona State escaped a close one against Washington State.
Last week, West Virginia, Florida, Oklahoma and Texas went down. And let’s not forget how badly Michigan dropped out of the rankings when it lost out to Appalachian State in the first week.
That leaves only eight of the Top 25 that are undefeated. One of those teams, of course, is the University of Hawai‘i who beat Utah State last night____.
This is a good sign because the Warriors have said over and over again that they’re first, trying to go undefeated, second, to be the Western Athletic Conference champions, and third, trying to break into the Bowl Championship Series.
For those of you who don’t know about the BCS, it is a postseason, five-game arrangement that matches the two top teams together to play in the championship, and eight other teams to play in other big bowl games.
The top two teams in the BCS standings automatically play in the national game.
The following bids go to the winners of the Atlantic Coast, Big East, Big 10, Big 12, Pacific 10 and Southeastern conferences.
One team from among the champions of the Conference USA, the Mid-American, the Mountain West, Sun Belt and Western Athletic conferences if the team is either ranked in the top 12 of the BCS standings or top 16 if its ranking is higher than that of a champion who has received an automatic berth.
I think it’s safe to say that there are a lot of people here in Hawai‘i that are crossing their fingers for the Warriors and especially Colt Brennan, who is still a Heisman Trophy candidate. Going undefeated, winning the WAC and earning a BCS bid can only help the senior quarterback receive an invitation to New York. Hopefully, his ankle injuries won’t have an effect on the voting. (It helps, though, that fellow candidate John David Booty of USC just got smacked with a loss.)
Brennan graces the cover of the latest edition of ESPN the Magazine on newsstands tomorrow.
However, I still want to see the Warriors in the Sheraton Hawai‘i Bowl in December at Aloha Stadium. I want to see him play there as often as I can because, if and when he gets drafted by the NFL next year, I can brag about the many times I’ve seen him connect with Jason Rivers, Davone Bess and Ryan Grice-Mullins.
So despite this odd start for college football, Hawai‘i is off to a good start. As more ranked teams drop and Hawai‘i continues to move up in the rankings, this can only mean good things for the university and even Kaua‘i. We currently have five players who claim Kaua‘i as their hometown: Kenny Estes, Keala and Keahi Watson, Jett Jasper and Vaughn Meatoga.
Who knows, maybe we’ll see some of our guys in a championship game?
