Waimea High School girls laid claim to the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation girls air rifle title when only four girls showed up from Kaua‘i High School.
Rolling behind solid performances from six of its wahine who shot over 200, the Menehune ladies finished with 1,073 total against the Raiders’ 728 points. The Raiders forfeited the girls team total because they were one short of qualifying for the team score.
In the boys arena, just one point made the difference between a shootout, and Waimea made that cut with an 1,100 to 1,099 win over Kaua‘i.
“I told them what I had to tell them,” Kaua‘i coach Douglas Nobriga said. “The rest was up to them.”
In the second match of the day, Kapa‘a got step up performances from its shooters to sweep Island School, 1,025 to 993 for the boys and 1,096 to 1,055 for the girls.
“Heather Walker scored her personal best in competition with a 238 (84-61-73), the highest score of the night,” said Kapa‘a coach Bill Barchers in an e-mail. “Reji Butac, who, as a brand-new shooter replacing one of our anchor shooters, fired a 188 to give a surprise victory to our men’s team.”
Right on Walker’s heels for Kapa‘a, Alma Iglesia finished with a 236 (88-82-66) followed by Britney Inanod at 235 (80-76-79). Darlene Jarquio (78-61-63-202) and Kamala Rojas (82-61-44-187) rounded out the Warrior ladies’ win.
In the absence of its anchor shooter Michelle Woltmon, Island School was led by Lexa Mink-Facco who topped the scoring with a 226 (90-70-66). Richelle Ridenour (78-77-64-219), Blaise LaMadrid (83-72-60-215), Sonya James (83-75-54-212) and Lindsey Duarte (73-68-42-183) figured in the scoring.
Team captain Ian Ramos led the Kapa‘a men in its sweep with a 234 (82-75-77) followed by Ikaika Fernandez (86-63-66-215), Jonathan Ganir (82-72-59-212), Butac and Phillip Hawley (76-41-58-175).
Jason Cabot took the lead for Kaua‘i, who could have clinched the boys title with a win over Waimea. Jason finished with a 245 (80-85-80) in the second relay, followed by Elliot Yamamoto (80-79-65-224), Kelan Adachi (85-75-58-218), Jonathan Cabot (78-79-54-211) and Tyler Navarro (79-79-43-201).
Waimea showed solid performances from its boys team, with seven of its eight members firing in the 200s. Peter Joyce (85-81-62-228), Kevin Aguilar (87-78-59-224) and Jared Coleman-Stark (86-77-60-223) anchored the Menehune, with Ty Shitanaka (78-72-66-216) and Geoffrey Tran (85-75-49-209) rounding out the scoring.
Waimea’s Beverly Grande (84-76-62-222) finished with the day’s best score for the girls followed by Chaelyn Briones (90-71-54-215), Ceci Sun (86-75-53-214), Rachel Wright (70-73-69-212) and Syanne Sagawa (76-84-50-210) anchoring the KIF championship.
Thursday marks the final match of the regular season when the Red Raiders travel to the Island School campus, and Kapa‘a goes to the Hanapepe Armory for its match against Waimea. Both matches start at 3 p.m.
