KAPA‘A — Oni Schmidt scored three touchdowns in Waimea High School’s 21-7 win over Kapa‘a High School last night at the Kapa‘a New Town Park Complex.
The senior running back scored his first TD in the second quarter for a 3-yard carry to the end zone with 6:30 left to the half. Then with less than a minute to go, Schmidt had a 7-yard run for his second.
Waimea’s Kelly Batis’ second-half opening kick was fumbled by Kapa‘a receiver Mauka Rapozo and recovered by the Menehune putting them in scoring position.
On the first play, starting quarterback Jayrald Watanabe handed the ball to Oni Schmidt who ran for a 27-yard TD. It was capped by Batis who was 3-for-3 in extra points.
Kapa‘a (0-2 Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation, 2-3 overall), however, started the game playing strong defense. They were first to get on the boards with a touchdown by Daniel Lizama. They played solid defense but just weren’t able to carry it throughout the game.
Schmidt, who was named the Pono Market Player of the Game, led the night in rushing with 105 yards. Teammate Ikaika Rapacon rushed for 73 yards. Kapa‘a’s Lizama rushed for 43 yards.
Kapa‘a had two fumbles to Waimea’s six.
In the junior varsity game, Waimea won 7-0. Jenzen Cacal passed to Bransen Agu for a 22-yard touchdown.
With the win, Waimea’s varsity team improves to 2-0 in the KIF and 5-0 overall. They pulled an upset of the defending KIF champions Kaua‘i High School last week with a 16-14 win.
The Menehune face the Red Raiders again next week at Vidinha Stadium.
