A&B Properties Inc., the real estate subsidiary of Honolulu-based Alexander & Baldwin Inc., has opened an office in Orange County, Calif., to expand its portfolio outside of its Hawai‘i landholdings on Maui and Kaua‘i.
“It has become clear that a stronger presence on the U.S. Mainland will lead to additional opportunities for growth and greater value creation,” A&B Properties Chief Executive Officer Stanley Kuriyama said in a company statement.
Kevin Stiles, vice president of Mainland acquisitions, will lead the office. Stiles brings nearly two decades of real estate investment, leasing and financing experience to the new office.
Stiles will be responsible for acquiring and investing in income producing properties, entitled development land and joint-venture development projects. Most recently, Stiles was vice president of leasing for CarrAmerica Realty Corp.
According to A&B, the company has partnered the development of several retail and office properties in California with an aggregate completed value in excess of $100 million over the past four years.
A&B’s commercial real estate portfolio contains more than 5.4 million square feet of retail, office and industrial space in Hawai‘i and on the Mainland. In the past decade, the company has invested in 25 properties outside of 89,000 acres of Hawai‘i landholdings, representing a capital commitment of more than $670 million.
Other Alexander & Baldwin Inc. subsidiaries include Matson Navigation Co. Inc. and Matson Integrated Logistics Inc.
On the road to healthier lives
As part of Women’s Health Month, sponsored by the Kaua‘i County Council on the Status for Women, the American Heart Association and volunteer nurses from NurseFinders will offer free blood pressure checks for 40 adults.
Cardiovascular disease remains the leading killer in America. High blood pressure, or hypertension, is one of several risk factors for heart disease, which can be reduced through regular blood pressure checks along with a healthy lifestyle.
Free blood pressure checks at the Kukui Grove food court will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sept. 20, and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sept. 27.

Hawaiian reports August stats
Hawaiian Airlines Inc.’s August traffic statistics showed that the airline served 644,278 passengers during the month.
Revenue passengers miles, which tracks one paying passenger transported one mile, for all operations were 714,989,000. Available seat miles, or one seat transported one mile, logged in at 814,945,000.
The load factor, or percentage of seating capacity used, was 87.7 percent.
All figures were up from those reported in August 2006, including year-to-date totals.
Help starting a business on Kaua‘i
The Hawaii Small Business Development Center will present workshops on how to start a business on Kaua‘i on the following dates:
• 3 to 5 p.m., Sept. 27; 9 to 11 a.m., Oct. 11. and 3 to 5 p.m., Oct. 25.
The free workshops will focus on entrepreneurship, forms of business organization, key ingredients for business success, steps involved in starting your own business, sources of capital, services offered by the Hawaii Small Business Development Center network as well as other resources for start-ups.

Hoku Whole Foods takes grocery shopping online
Hoku Whole Foods in Kapa‘a has launched online shopping through its Web site, www.hokuwholefoods.com.
According to owners Brett Lamberson and Rilyn Arries, the benefits of shopping online for groceries are plentiful.
“Once people experience the simplicity and savings, they’re hooked,” Lamberson said in a press release.
The Hoku Web site features more than 20,000 natural and organic food and other products, which can be added to a personalized grocery list.
Two weeks later, the items arrive at the Hoku store, ready to be picked up.

New hires around town
The following individual was recently appointed to a leadership position in the business community:
• Jay Heidenreich was named director of sales and marketing for Kauai Marriott Resort & Beach Club. Heidenreich will be responsible for implementing a strategic business plan to generate more leisure and group rooms as well as managing marketing and public relations endeavors. Prior to joining the Marriott, Heidenreich was the director of sales and marketing at the Princeville Resort.
• Frank Kiger was named general manager of Alexander & Baldwin Inc.’s Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar Co. Kiger will take over day-to-day operations in January 2008. Kiger is currently senior vice president of factory operations for Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar. He started there in 2003. Previously, he served as president of Kauai Coffee Co., starting as manager there in 1996, following a 20-year career with McBryde Sugar Co. on Kaua‘i.
