An electrical fault at the Port Allen Power Plant triggered outages across the island last night.
As a result of the fault, which occurred at 7:26 p.m., Port Allen lost multiple generators, causing the power to go out for about a quarter of Kaua‘i, according to Kaua‘i Island Utility Cooperative Production Manager Brad Rockwell.
As of 9:56 p.m. yesterday, KIUC said power had been restored to the affected areas, including Kilauea, parts of Kapa‘a, Hanama‘ulu, parts of Lihu‘e, Kukui Grove, Puhi, Lawa‘i, ‘Oma‘o and Kalaheo after more than two hours without electricity.
Power to three locations — Hanapepe, Rice Street in Lihu‘e and Koloa Road in Lawa‘i — were restored shortly after the event.
During the outage, stop lights were reported out of service in places, including the intersection of Kaumuali‘i Highway and Nawiliwili Road.
In another incident at the Port Allen station in mid-July, a generator trip caused island-wide outages, though backup generators restored power within the hour.
